This is John's  "Old Fashioned  Cape Cod Catboat". Used originally by practical New England fishermen, these boats  had a centerboard so they could deliver their cargo in shallow water. The single sail provided ease of handling and had "reef points" to allow shortening of the sail in heavy weather. It also allowed for a large amount of sail to be loosed in light winds. Please note the width of the cockpit which often was half the size of boat's length. This gave plenty of room for whatever work was being done and added to the boat's stability. John's Catboat weathervane is 23" long and comes with a relatively short  roof mount measuring 18".  In harsh weather,  it is hard to reef a copper sail that's up on the top of your roof!  To simplify things,  John. shortened the sail a little more than the original boats. Even so, the mast top  stands 50" above the peak of your roof.
